E Guitar Chord

The default position for the E chord is the following:

  • first (index) finger on string 3 – fret 1
  • second (middle) finger on string 5 – fret 2
  • third (ring) finger on string 4 – fret 2

For this chord all the strings are played.

Another variation of E chord very useful for alternating is the E7 chord, which has the same positions as the main E chord but with the third finger NOT pressing the string 4 on fret 2.

  • first (index) finger on string 3 – fret 1
  • second (middle) finger on string 5 – fret 2

The E7 chord can be played also as follows:

  • first (index) finger on string 3 – fret 1
  • second (middle) finger on string 5 – fret 2
  • third (ring) finger on string 4 – fret 2
  • fourth (pinky) finger on string 2 – fret 3

This chord has a different sound and can be used as a variation of the main E chord position with the fourth finger pressing the string 2 on fret 3.
