Major Scale Guitar Patterns

The major scale is also known as Ionian scale and it is one of the most commonly used musical scales. The major scale is correlated with innocently happy, joyful or cheerful emotions.

The patterns presented in this post are only for G major scale, but can be applied for other scales by translating these positions on the guitar fretboard. For G major scale, the corresponding one is E minor scale, which contains the same notes but with different roots.

There are 5 positions or patterns on the guitar fretboard for the major scale.

The notes marked with green color in images are the root notes of the scale.
