  • first (index) finger on string 1 – fret 1
  • second (middle) finger on string 3 – fret 2
  • third (ring) finger on string 2 – fret 3

In this case for this chord the strings 5 and 6 are not played.

Another simple variation of Dm chord is Dm6 with the following position:

  • first(index) finger on string 1 – fret 1
  • second (middle) finger on string 3 – fret 2

Also for this chord only the first four strings are played.

There are another 2 useful variations on Dm chord which are played in many songs: Dsus2 and Dsus4.

The first variation: Dsus2

  • second (middle) finger on string 3 – fret 2

This chord is played like normal D, but with the fourth finger pressing on fret 3 on the first string.

You can use all these variations of Dm chord to add diversity in strumming or finger picking a single Dm chord.
