0

The first position for the D chord is the following:

  • first (index) finger on string 1 – fret 2
  • second (middle) finger on string 3 – fret 2
  • third (ring) finger on string 2 – fret 3

In this case for this chord the strings 5 and 6 are not played.

G |--2----||
D |--0----||

E |-------||

If you need to use the bass strings 1 and 2, the D guitar chord can also be played as follows:

  • first (index) finger on string 6 – fret 2
  • second (middle) finger on string 3 – fret 2
  • third (ring) finger on string 2 – fret 3

This is very nice and useful on changing between G, D and Em chords, because G and Em are usually played with all 6 strings and D chord is played only with 4 strings and has less bass sound.

D Guitar Chord with bass

To keep it simple, the first string is not played. If it needs to be played, the first string must be pressed on fret 2.

E |--2----||

There are another 2 useful variations on D chord which are played in many songs: Dsus2 and Dsus4. It may sound sophisticated but these chords are very easy.

The first variation: Dsus2

  • second (middle) finger on string 3 – fret 2
  • third (ring) finger on string 2 – fret 3

The strings 5 and 6 are not played.

Dsus2 Guitar Chord

Text tab version of the first variation of D chord (Dsus2):

E |--0----||
B |--3----||
G |--2----||
D |--0----||
A |-------||
E |-------||

This chord is played like normal D, but with the third finger raised (not pressing on fret 2 on the string 1).

The second variation: Dsus4

  • first (index) finger on string 3 – fret 2
  • second (middle) finger on string 1 – fret 2 (optional – just to maintain the D chord position)
  • third (ring) finger on string 2 – fret 3
  • fourth (pinky) finger on string 1 – fret 3

The strings 5 and 6 are not played.

Dsus4 Guitar Chord

Text tab version of the first variation of D chord (Dsus4):

Dsus4 Guitar Chord Staff and Tab

E |--3----||
B |--3----||
G |--2----||
D |--0----||
A |-------||
E |-------||

This chord is played like normal D, but with the fourth finger pressing on fret 3 on the first string.

You can jam with these 3 variations to make a long strumming of D chord less boring.
