The main position for Am chord is the following:

  • first (index) finger on string 2 – fret 1
  • second (middle) finger on string 4 – fret 2
  • third (ring) finger on string 3 – fret 2

For this chord only the first five strings are played.

This chord can be play in a Bm shape using fingers 2, 3 and 4 (in the case of Bm the first finger is used for barre the strings):

  • second (middle) finger on string 2 – fret 1
  • third (ring) finger on string 4 – fret 2
  • fourth (pinky) finger on string 3 – fret 2

In this case the first finger remains available for playing barre chords.

Am Chord

There is another variation of this chord named Am7 with three simple positions.

The first and most simple position for Am7 chord is the next one:

  • first (index) finger on string 2 – fret 1
  • second (middle) finger on string 4 – fret 2

This shape is the same as the first position but with the third finger NOT pressing on string 3 on fret 2.

The second position for Am7 chord is the following:

  • first (index) finger on string 2 – fret 1
  • second (middle) finger on string 4 – fret 2
  • fourth (pinky) finger on string 1 – fret 3

This shape is based on the previous position but with the fourth finger pressing the string 1 on fret 3 to create a different sound but maintaining the same chord.

The third position for Am7 chord is the following:

  • first (index) finger on string 2 – fret 1
  • second (middle) finger on string 4 – fret 2
  • third (ring) finger on string 3 – fret 2

This shape is based on main Am position with the fourth finger pressing the string 1 on fret 3 to create a sound variation.
