The first position for A chord is the following:

  • first (index) finger on string 4 – fret 2
  • second (middle) finger on string 3 – fret 2
  • third (ring) finger on string 2 – fret 2

For this chord only the first five strings are played.

This chord can be play as the shape of B chord:

  • second (middle) finger on string 4 – fret 2
  • third (ring) finger on string 3 – fret 2
  • fourth (pinky) finger on string 2 – fret 2

In this case the first finger remains unused but this position is useful when playing barre chords.

A Chord

Another variation of this chord is A7 chord with the following position:

  • first (index) finger on string 4 – fret 2
  • third (ring) finger on string 2 – fret 2

This shape is the same as the first position but with the middle finger NOT pressing on string 3 on fret 2.

 

A7 Guitar Chord

In the case of using the second form (B shape) the position is presented below.

  • second (index) finger on string 4 – fret 2
  • fourth (pinky) finger on string 2 – fret 2

  • first (index) finger on string 4 – fret 2
